UChicago GRAD offers a Writing Tutor for Graduate Students and Postdocs with ESL/EAL needs.

UChicago Graduate students and Postdocs can make an appointment.

UChicagoGRAD now offers one-on-one writing tutoring for graduate students and postdocs who speak English as an additional language. Students are encouraged to consult with tutors on current writing projects like term papers or dissertation chapters to enhance their understanding of writing norms in academic English.  Students are asked to submit their drafts at least 24 hours in advance of an appointment. Schedule appointments via GRAD Gargoyle by selecting “Written Communication: English Language Tutoring” after logging in.

Tutoring Rules

NOTE: The Writing Tutor is not permitted to edit/proofread student work directly, but can identify issues or patterns of error. The tutor also may not review more than 10 pages of text (Times New Roman font, size 12, double-spaced) in a session.

The ESL/EAL Graduate Writing Tutor can:

  • Discuss the specifications of an upcoming writing assignment
  • Brainstorm how to get started writing a paper including how best to construct an argument
  • Read full or partial drafts of papers and comment on overall argumentation, organization (globally and at the paragraph level), clarity, and logical flow
  • Spot patterns of grammatical and punctuation errors in a student’s prose and teach student how to identify and correct these patterns
  • Discuss voice, formality, and tone of an essay
  • Read drafts and comment on effective use of evidence and quotes
  • Provide tips on including North American stylistic features to an essay
  • Provide self-editing tips and direct students to helpful writing resources
