ESL/EAL Instructor for Academic English Pre-Matriculation Program (AEPP)
Seeking:
NOTE: DUE TO COVID-19, THERE WILL BE A REMOTE LEARNING OPTION FOR THE STUDENTS FOR AEPP 2020. IT IS YET TO BE DECIDED WHETHER THESE CLASSES WILL BE TAUGHT ON CAMPUS. IN ADDITION, WE HAVE YET TO DECIDE WHETHER THERE WILL BE AN IN-PERSON OPTION FOR THE STUDENTS.
Summer ESL/EAL instructor who has at least a Master’s in Applied Linguistics (or a related field) and experience teaching English at the university (preferably graduate) level. Must have experience adapting class materials and lesson plans to students’ needs (at times on short notice). Must be able to provide guidance on academic and cultural resources on the UChicago campus and the city of Chicago to incoming graduate students.

Title: ESL/EAL Instructor
Dates: Aug 3 - 28, 2020
Hours: (i) Curriculum orientation Aug 3 - 7; (ii) Mondays to Thursdays 3 hours of class (Aug 10-27); (iii) Friday workshops and picnics (Aug 7, 14, 21, 28); (iv) Field excursion(s) with students outside of the classroom
Meetings: (i) Introductory meetings in June/July; (ii) Instructor check-ins on Wednesdays during lunch; (iii) Staff meetings on Friday afternoons; (iv) Post-AEPP feedback meeting (on August 28)
Tentative Duties:
- Attendance at introductory meetings during June and July (~once a month, could participate via Skype)
- Attendance at curriculum orientation and training sessions during August 3-7 (tentatively 9-5p)
- Attendance at (i) instructor check-ins on Wednesdays during lunch or late afternoon and (ii) staff meetings on Friday afternoons
- Attendance and assistance with setup and teardown at Friday orientation events, workshops, and picnics
- Attendance at post-AEPP feedback meeting (on Aug 28)
- Regular communication during AEPP session with fellow instructors, language pedagogy specialists, and ELI admin
- Scaffolding, modifying, and creating additional class materials as necessary
- Class preparation including printing (copy code to be provided)
- Course instruction
- Assignment grading
- Office hours (by appointment) and communication with students outside of the classroom
- End-of-session evaluation forms for each student
- Online course maintenance via Canvas and Google Drive
- Field excursion(s) with students outside of the classroom
- Potential class observation by ELI Director
