ESL/EAL Instructor for Academic English Pre-Matriculation Program (AEPP)

Position Details:

Seeking: Summer ESL/EAL Instructor who has at least a Master’s in TESOL or Applied Linguistics (or a related field) and experience teaching English at the university (preferably graduate) level. Must have experience adapting class materials and lesson plans to students’ needs (at times on short notice). Must be able to provide guidance on academic and cultural resources on the UChicago campus and in the city of Chicago to incoming graduate students.

Title: ESL/EAL Instructor

Program dates
  • Session 1: Aug 8 to 29, 2024
  • Session 2: Aug 29 to Sep 20, 2024
Program hours
  • Mon to Thu 3 hours of class
  • Fri workshops and picnics
  • Lunch with students on last day of class

Orientation and meetings:

  • Introductory meeting(s) 
  • Three-day curriculum orientation before program starts
  • Instructor check-ins on Wed after class
  • Staff meetings on Fri afternoons
  • Post-AEPP feedback meeting(s)

Tentative Duties:

  • Attendance at meetings and events described above
  • Class preparation
  • Class instruction
  • Assignment grading 
  • Office hours (by appointment) and communication with students outside of classtime 
  • Online course maintenance via Canvas and Google Drive 
  • Scaffolding, modifying, and creating additional class materials as necessary 
  • End-of-session evaluation forms for each student 
  • Regular communication with fellow instructors, language pedagogy specialists, and ELI administration using Microsoft Teams and email 
  • Potential class observation by ELI Director
