AEPP Schedule and Calendars

AEPP 1 2019 runs from Aug 9 - 30 (Students arrive on Aug 7 or 8) >>

AEPP 2 2019 runs from Aug 30 - Sep 20 (Students arrive on Aug 28 or 29) >>

This three-week intensive course has two tracks: (A) Speaking and (B) Writing. You cannot do both, as the two tracks have similar content and themes (but the assignments will be speaking- vs. writing-based).

The AEPP schedule includes the following activities:

Student Arrival: Check-in with AEPP staff, and (i) get class information, (ii) meet instructors, and (iii) receive weekend assignments

Welcome Presentation: Students get a brief orientation to UChicago and to how to make the most out of the AEPP

Language-Infused Cultural Orientation: UChicago: Students independently explore Hyde Park and complete structured tasks to build confidence and develop cultural knowledge about campus and surrounding area

Intensive Academic English Course: Students build spoken or written Academic English proficiency as they synthesize, analyze, and integrate the linguistic and cultural information acquired out of class (3-hour session in the morning or afternoon)

Language-Infused Cultural Programming: Chicago as Classroom: Through structured activities, students build confidence and cultural knowledge. Students research and explore a Chicago neighborhood in preparation for their comprehensive project. Students also interact with Chicagoans in formal and informal settings to strengthen communication skills, build confidence, and learn about the local varieties of English and cultural diversity in the city

Out-of-Class Activities: Students prepare for UChicago academic culture through daily, rigorous assignments

Friday Workshop: Various Topics: The AEPP instructors lead workshops on a variety of linguistic and cultural topics

Friday Workshop: Civic Engagement: Students share intercultural perspectives and exchange ideas with campus-based, civic engagement programs

Picnic Lunch: Students eat lunch catered by a local Hyde Park business and network with other AEPP students, AEPP staff, and UChicago affiliates
